soft blocks
Derived from the curved corner of an existing triple decker in Cambridge, MA this project divides the massing of the triple decker into a series of blocks to explore the softening of edges through filleting. The resulting design transforms and expands two existing triple deckers into an artist in residence campus at the heart of a residential neighborhood in Cambridge, MA.
The formal softening of the edges examines multiple uses and readings of the curves. They:
-
Direct circulation between and through the buildings on campus
-
Index programmatic divisions
-
Serve as a lighting strategy. Where the curves peel in, the remainder space is used to place a window
Ultimately, these self-similar blocks toggle between discretization and continuity to provide communal, interactive, and private spaces for the artists in residence.
